“28 After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now accomplished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, He said, “I’m thirsty!” 29 A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on hyssop and held it up to His mouth. 30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” Then bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.” (John 19:28-30 )
What Did Jesus’ Crazy Sacrifice Accomplish On The Cross?
- Jesus completed everything God had promised.
“44 Then He told them, “These are My words that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. 46 He also said to them, “This is what is written: The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day, 47 and repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.” (Luke 24:44-47 )
- Jesus satisfied what God’s justice required.
“3 What the law could not do since it was limited by the flesh, God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending His own Son in flesh like ours under sin’s domain, and as a sin offering, 4 in order that the law’s requirement would be accomplished in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.” (Romans 8:3-4 )
“After he had finished his work, he became the source of eternal salvation for everyone who obeys him.” (Hebrews 5:9 ) [GW]
- Jesus paid off the debt I owed God!
“He erased the certificate of debt, with its obligations, that was against us and opposed to us, and has taken it out of the way by nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:14 )
“We have redemption, the forgiveness of sins, in Him.” [HCSB]
That means that “His Son paid the price to free us, which means that our sins are forgiven.” (Colossians 1:14 ) [GW]
- Jesus defeated the fear of death.
“14 Now since the children have flesh and blood in common, Jesus also shared in these, so that through His death He might destroy the one holding the power of death—that is, the Devil— 15 and free those who were held in slavery all their lives by the fear of death.” (Hebrews 2:14-15 )
“Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life.” (Romans 6:4 )
- Jesus destroyed Satan’s power to control me ...
… by means of temptation: “He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son He loves.” (Colossians 1:13 )
… by means of condemnation: “He disarmed the rulers and authorities and disgraced them publicly; He triumphed over them by Him.” (Colossians 2:15 )
